The first prizewinner for the promotion of nanotechnology is Russian RailwaysThe awarding ceremony for the promotion and implementation of nanotechnology Growth factor organized by JSC RUSNANO took place in the framework of the Open Innovations Forum. The winner is Russian Railways.

As previously discussed in Rusnano, a number of factors was taken into account when determining the winner, including: the number and scale of projects implemented by the introduction of nanotechnological products, economic benefits, activity in promotion of innovative and nanotechnological solutions.

JSC Russian Railways introduced more than 500 innovative solutions both on the rolling stock and the rail infrastructure. In particular, between 2008 and 2011 years it switched to energy-efficient LED lighting of 32 railway stations, 20 locomotives, multiple units and car-repair depot, 25 passenger platforms, 5 railway bridges and 2 railway stations, Severomuyskiy tunnel, which allowed to reduce energy consumption by 46.9M kWh for the given period.

In addition, a number of devices from composite materials have been developed specially for Russian Railways that significantly improve the quality of services. For example, the design of the contact system elements with the use of composite materials will significantly reduce operating costs while increasing the life of the service, and the new locking and sealing devices will improve customer service through more technological cargo accounting.

Along with this, JSC Russian Railways has made a great contribution to the promotion of innovation. A traveling exhibition and lecture complex, which provides large-scale exhibition of Russian technological innovations, including nanotechnological, has been visited by more than 170K people from 82 cities of Russia.
