Leonard Blavatnik invested $380M in incubator Rocket Internet

Leonard Blavatnik invested $380M in incubator Rocket InternetAccess Industries, owned by Leonard Blavatnik, and Sweden investment company Kinnevik AB since May 2012 invested $500M in shares of German Internet-incubator Rocket Internet, said in a message of this venture company.

Attracted money the company will direct to widening of its network of Internet-startups. AB Kinnevik invested in incubator €67M (about $88M), in order to save its share on the level 24%. Thus, investment of Access Industries in Rocket Internet contributed more than $400M. There is no information about the share that received the company of Leonard Blavatnik in incubator.

Access Industries was founded in 1986 by Leonard Blavatnik and is focused on investments in three sectors: natural resources, media and telecommunications, real estate. He is a co-owner of such companies as Warner Music, “Rusal”, “Amedia”, Faena Group, Deezer and others.

Rocket Internet identifies itself as a leading incubator of Startups and is oriented on e-commerce development. The company was established in 2007 by three brothers Zamver, who were one of the first investors in such projects as Facebook and LinkedIn. According to Rocket Internet data, the company possesses shares in 75 venture projects from more than 50 countries all over the world.

Among shareholders are: JP Morgan, Holtzbrinck Ventures, Blumberg Capital, New Enterprise Associates, Phenomen Ventures, ru-Net and others, but their shares are not disclosed.

Initially Rocket Internet acted in Europe, but in course of time the incubator focused on developing markets. Nowadays key regions for Rocket Internet are Russia, Latin America, Africa, Middle East, India, South-East Asia and Australia. This year several Startups of Rocket Internet have already attracted significant investments, becoming for domestic markets landmark transactions.
