Tomsk innovators in Siberia have developed Russia?s first surgical endoscope disinfectant based on Russian-made glyoxal, a high-purity nontoxic substance, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported. The new product has been created by Aldomed, a joint venture between two regional universities, including Tomsk State University and Siberian State Medical University. Alexei Sazonov, the CEO of Aldomed, estimated in an exchange with RIA that the disinfectant would be ?less costly than the international competition.? ?Similar glyoxal-based substances do exist in other countries, but those are far from cost-effective. Ours is reasonably priced because it is based on Russian raw material. Now hospitals will be able to get disinfectants of similar quality for less money,? he said. Most of the surgical endoscope disinfectants used in Russia today are based on peracetic acid, which is an extremely aggressive substance. According to Mr. Sazonov, the product has already been approved by Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian consumer goods watchdog. It is currently undergoing certification, and Aldomed hopes the disinfectant will hit the market early next year...
