A new drug to treat liver developed by scientists at the Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry (PIBC) has been approved for commercial production by the Russian Ministry of Healthcare, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing a statement by PIBC CEO Valentin Stonik. The drug, called ?Maksar,? was originally developed at PIBC in the early 2000s for use against acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and other liver diseases. At the heart of the drug?s innovative chemical composition is an extract from the wood of Maackia amurensis, or just Amur maackia, a species of tree in the Fabaceae family that can grow up to 50ft tall and occurs in Russia?s Far East in the Amur River region, as well as in Northeast China and Korea...
