Scientists in Tambov, in Central Russia, have teamed up with Zircoa, an American company, in an effort to develop new nanoceramics, announced Tambov Derzhavin State University, the main Russian driver behind the joint project. The actual implementer of the endeavor is Nanotechnologies & Nanomaterials, a scientific and educational center set up by the university. The Russo-American group is working on the development of technologies that would lead to the synthesis and production of nanoceramics based on zirconium dioxide. With its unique combination of physical and mechanical properties zirconium nanoceramics is used where projects have to resist very high temperatures, aggressive chemical mediums, abrasion-caused wear, etc. The future product may have a wide range of applications, including pharmaceutical production; the grinding of ore to extract hard-to-reach minerals; in high-temperature furnaces where crystals such as sapphires are grown; in metallurgy such as production of pure platinum; and an array of other sectors...
