Government helps Novosibirsk team to seek new cancer therapies
Scientists at a research institute in Novosibirsk, in Siberia, are using a sizable ?megagrant? from the Russian Government in a bid to find brand new cancer therapies
The Novosibirsk-based Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, in Siberia, has won a ?megagrant? from the Russian Government, and now its scientists are studying cell division mechanisms in a bid to find brand new cancer therapies, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing a statement by Igor Zhimulyov, the director of the think-tank. The formation and development of malignant tumors is a process closely related to sporadic cell division, and that?s why ?we are looking for various approaches to controlling cell division,? Mr. Zhimulyov said. A $2.7m ?megagrant? is expected to come from federal coffers in a few tranches over the next three years. Under terms of Russia?s ?megagrant? program, the Novosibirsk project will be led by a foreign specialist. The Siberian researchers are expecting Maurizio Gatti from the University of Rome to come and join them soon...
