Nanocor, an innovative company in Tomsk, in Siberia, has come up with a new endovascular stent with a biodegradable coating to treat cardiovascular diseases, announced Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), of which Nanocor is a tech spin-off. Nanocor is also a resident of Skolkovo, the government-owned innovation hub still under construction just outside Moscow. According to Prof. Shamil Akhmedov, the CEO of Nanocor and Deputy Director for Innovation and Strategic Development at TPU?s Research Institute of Cardiology, in developing the project the scientists decided to impact atherosclerotic (atheromatous) plaques using nanoparticles. To accomplish that, the researching physicians recruited help from TPU?s Biotechnology and Organic Chemistry Chair.
